Boarding, houses and hostels

Boarding school management for houses, hostels and boarders

Boarders and day scholars pay and attend differently. Each group has its own fee structures and expected days.

Enaton runs a boarding school and a day school side by side. Set up your houses and the hostels or dormitories in each, bill boarders and day scholars on their own fee structures, and expect each group on its own days for attendance and the diary.

What it does

Enaton runs a boarding school and a day school side by side. Set up your houses and the hostels or dormitories in each, bill boarders and day scholars on their own fee structures, and expect each group on its own days for attendance and the diary.

Houses and hostels

  • Houses set up by name, the way your school already names them
  • Hostels or dormitories set up and linked to their house
  • A house or hostel closed for a term is switched off, not deleted

Boarders and day scholars

  • Fee structures per group of learners, so boarders and day scholars are billed correctly
  • Attendance days set separately for boarders, weekends included where they live at school
  • Diary days set separately for boarders and day scholars

Boarding money

  • Boarding on its own vote head, with its own income and its own spending
  • Kitchen and boarding stores issued to a named person, signed for by them
  • The answer to whether boarding covers its own costs, from the same books

Visiting day

On visiting day the gate is busiest. Each parent is recorded at the gate against their own child, with time in and time out, so the school knows who came to see whom.

A boarding school is two schools in one

Boarders live at school and day scholars go home. They pay different fees, they are expected on different days, and their parents need different things from the school. Most systems treat every learner as a day scholar and leave the boarding side to a separate book.

So the weekend register is missed, boarding fees sit on a spreadsheet beside the fee system, and nobody can say whether boarding pays for itself.

How Enaton handles it

Boarders and day scholars are each set up for what they are. Fee structures are built per group of learners, so boarders are billed boarding and day scholars are not. Attendance expects boarders on their own days, weekends included if you choose, and day scholars on school days.

Your houses and the hostels or dormitories in each are kept in the same system as everything else, and boarding income and spending sit on their own vote head.

Questions we get about this

Can we run boarders and day scholars in the same school?

Yes. Each group has its own fee structure and its own expected days for attendance and the diary, in the same system.

Does Enaton record houses and dormitories?

Yes. You set up your houses and the hostels or dormitories in each, and link each hostel to its house.

Are boarders expected on weekends?

If you choose. Boarders’ attendance days are set separately from day scholars’, so a weekend register for boarders is expected rather than forgotten.

Can we see whether boarding pays for itself?

Yes. Boarding sits on its own vote head, so its income and its spending are in the same books.
